snippet: The Statewide Landcover And Trees Study (SLATS) is a scientific monitoring program which monitors, maps and reports on woody vegetation change in Queensland. Since the 1990’s and up to the 2017-18 reporting period, SLATS has been monitoring woody vegetation loss due to land clearing, applying a methodology which used Landsat satellite imagery. From 2018 onwards, woody vegetation clearing is mapped using Sentinel-2 imagery. This dataset shows woody vegetation clearing detected in the 2018–19 monitoring period (nominally August 2018 to August 2019), using Sentinel-2 satellite imagery. Please refer to the ‘Additional Information’ section below for further information, including attribute field codes. The attributes represent the SLATS landcover replacement class and are identified in the field "Descr" as follows: Pasture; Crop; Settlement; Mine; Infrastructure; Timber Plantation; Partial clearing minor; Natural disaster damage; Partial clearing pasture major; Partial clearing forestry major. Missed clearing in previous era was not included due to the transition from Landsat to Sentinel-2 imagery. For further information, refer to https://www.qld.gov.au/environment/land/management/mapping/statewide-monitoring/slats

The data are prepared in raster format. This is converted to vector for publication and attributed with a uniform set of attributes. Geometrically corrected Sentinel-2 images are acquired from the Australasian Regional Copernicus Data Hub (http://www.copernicus.gov.au/), and radiometric standardisation, and topographic correction applied. Completeness: Cloud cover in Sentinel-2 satellite images used for the SLATS clearing analysis may occlude some clearing events leading to omission of some events in the reporting period. Satellite image dates are manually selected to be as cloud free as possible to minimise these omissions. Clearing that was omitted due to cloud cover or for other reasons (e.g. insufficient evidence in the Sentinel-2 satellite imagery used) in the reporting period in which it occurred may be identified in the subsequent reporting period(s) where there is clear evidence of clearing activity. Where identified, the clearing is mapped and attributed as “Missed clearing from previous era” in the subsequent SLATS mapping period(s). Consistency: The SLATS clearing mapping is subject to a quality control procedure for the majority of satellite scenes in the state where clearing activity occurs. Additional moderation and consistency checks are undertaken by a senior remote sensing scientist. Mapping at scene boundaries is edge-matched following a systematic mapping protocol. Positional accuracy: All the data described here has been generated from Level 1C Sentinel-2 image products routinely downloaded from the Australasian Regional Copernicus Data Hub (http://www.copernicus.gov.au/). Data are pre-processed by the Queensland Government’s Remote Sensing Centre to generate a surface reflectance product following Flood, et al. (2013) and Flood (2017). Imagery has a spatial resolution of 10m and a positional accuracy of 5m. References: Flood, N., Danaher, T., Gill, T. and Gillingham, S. 2013.
