This data product identifies relative conservation values for the riverine and non-riverine wetlands within a specified study area (usually a drainage catchment). This product was developed using the Aquatic Biodiversity Assessment and Mapping Method (AquaBAMM) which is a comprehensive methodology developed by the Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation for assessing the conservation values of wetlands in Queensland (Clayton et al 2006). The method uses available data including data resulting from expert opinion to produce an Aquatic Conservation Assessment (ACA) within a study area. This data product contains comprehensive information on the:
• Aquatic naturalness of the wetlands
• Catchment naturalness surrounding the wetlands
• Diversity and species richness • Presence of threatened species and ecosystems
• Presence of priority species and ecosystems
• Special features of the wetlands as identified by expert opinion
• Physical and ecological connectivity between wetlands
• Significance and uniqueness of the wetlands
ACAs involve a non-social, non-economic and tenure-blind assessment of aquatic conservation values. The assessment methodology (AquaBAMM) uses Criteria, Indicators and Measures to assess relative wetland conservation values at the individual wetland or subsection scale. ACA results include a comprehensive set of baseline ecological information, and an overall assessment of aquatic conservation values (AquaScore). The results provide a decision support tool that is easily updated and able to be comprehensively interrogated. |
