Regional Biodiversity Corridors represent areas of regional significance that support ecological connectivity between biodiversity values, including habitats, ecosystems and protected areas.

This dataset is largely derived from the statewide Regional Biodiversity Corridor layer, with minor adjustments made to ensure alignment with the spatial extent, planning context and outcomes of the Far North Queensland Regional Plan. The corridors provide a strategic planning framework to inform land use planning and decision‑making by recognising the importance of maintaining and enhancing landscape connectivity at a regional scale. Identification of a Regional Biodiversity Corridor does not allocate land use or determine development outcomes.

</idAbs>

<measDesc>Centrelines used to develop corridor buffers have been derived from multiple sources mapped at varying spatial scales and accuracies. Notwithstanding, riparian centreline linework should generally be consistent with, or better, than the stated accuracies associated with the GEODATA TOPO 250K Series 2 data. Terrestrial centrelines have been mapped largely based upon the spatial distribution of underlying mapped remnant vegetation as identified by the Queensland Herbarium and for which the positional accuracy of polygons is generally considered +/- 100m. In some areas, mapped vegetation data may have been used with positional accuracies of up to +/- 250m.</measDesc>

<statement>For BPA corridors, expert panels adopted the following corridor functions and principles for identifying terrestrial and riparian corridors:
Terrestrial Bioregional corridors maintain ecological and evolutionary processes at a landscape scale by: Maintaining long term evolutionary/genetic processes that allow the natural change in distributions of species and connectivity between populations of species over long periods of time; Maintaining landscape/ecosystems processes associated with geological, altitudinal and climatic gradients, to allow for ecological responses to climate change; Maintaining large scale seasonal/migratory species processes and movement of fauna; Maximising connectivity between large tracts/patches of remnant vegetation; Identifying key areas for rehabilitation and offsets. Riparian Bioregional Corridors also maintain and encourage connectivity of riparian and associated ecosystems. The following principles were used to map the original BPA terrestrial and riparian corridors. Terrestrial corridors should: Complement (i.e. minimise overlap and maximise connectivity) riparian landscape corridors; Follow major watershed/catchments and/or coastal boundaries; Incorporate major altitudinal/geological/climatic gradients; Include and maximise connectivity between large tracts/patches of remnant vegetation; Include and maximise connectivity between remnant vegetation in good condition. Riparian Bioregional corridors should: Complement (i.e. minimise overlap and maximise connectivity) terrestrial landscape corridors; Include and maximise connectivity between tracts/patches of remnant vegetation; Include and maximise connectivity between remnant vegetation in good condition; Be located along the major river or creek systems within the bioregion in question.
For further information on corridor networks identified via Biodiversity Planning Assessments, please refer to the relevant expert panel landscape reports (included within individual Biodiversity Planning Assessments data package releases available through the Queensland Spatial Catalogue (https://qldspatial.information.qld.gov.au/catalogue/custom/index.page):
Versions:
Version 1.1 (released May 2014) - Incorporated corridor networks as identified in completed biodiversity assessments at the time. For bioregions, where no completed BPA was available (i.e. Gulf Plains, Wet Tropics and North West Highlands), as mentioned above, corridor centrelines from the Statewide Conservation Corridors were used to identify terrestrial corridors, whilst major watercourses from the GEODATA TOPO 250K Series 2 Topographic Data riparian corridors.
Version 1.2 (released September 2015) - As per version 1.1, however, included a new corridor network as defined in the newly completed Gulf Plains Biodiversity Planning Assessment, Version 1.1.
Version 1.3 (released November 2016) - As per version 1.2 above, however, the corridor network within the South East Queensland bioregion was amended to reflect any additions, deletions, and alterations as per the updated release of the South East Queensland Biodiversity Planning Assessment, version 4.1.
Version 1.4 (released March 2018) - As per version 1.3 above, however, the corridor network within the Brigalow Belt bioregion was amended to reflect any additions, deletions, and alterations as per the updated release of the Brigalow Belt Biodiversity Planning Assessment, version 2.1.
Version 1.5 (released November 2019) - As per version 1.4 above, however, included the new landscape corridor network as defined in the newly completed Wet Tropics Biodiversity Planning Assessment, Version 1.1.
Version 1.6 (released September 2020) - As per version 1.5 above, however, included the new landscape corridor network as defined in the newly completed Northwest Highlands Biodiversity Planning Assessment, Version 1.1.
Version 1.7 (released December 2024) - As per version 1.6 above, however, included the new landscape corridor network as defined in the newly completed New England Tableland Biodiversity Planning Assessment, Version 3.1.</statement>
