An Exploration Permit for Coal (EPC) is a permit that allows you to carry out authorised activities on the land to determine what coal exists, and it's quality and quantity. It covers any coal in or under land. An EPC covers exploration activities only. Exploration permits are applied for and granted over blocks and sub-blocks. These are referenced to Block Identification Maps (BIM) Series B. These are identified by reference to the latitudes and longitudes defined in the Geocentric Datum of Australia 2020 (GDA2020). Each BIM has a unique name and contains 3456 blocks, which are numbered in sequence. Each block is approximately 75 square km in area and each block is divided into 25 sub-blocks. Area of a EPC cannot exceed 300 sub-blocks unless otherwise approved.
